Don’t let auto-update delay "Turn off computer"

leave a comment

I never get tired of finding ways to prevent the auto update from preventing me from using the computer the way I want it or to rant about the poor user experience!

Picture this:

As a good user, I keep Auto-updates on, and once it has finished downloading the updates, I would be nagged ever so often whether I want to restart or not! And, this dialog makes its presence felt at the most appropriate times like when presenting to a group of senior managers.

Auto update popup window

Or, when you use an application which makes use of the Shortcut key "Alt+N." You wouldn’t even notice and suddenly all the apps are closing, as if the machine is going for a shutdown. What has happened is the "modal" dialog popped up, waiting for you to press Alt N or Alt L and you pressed Alt+N at the right moment, and now you are being blessed with lost work, lost browser sessions. How about this happening when you are in them midst of a credit-card transaction, say purchasing a ticket, in which you are expected to take a print of the last screen to the airport!

The other nag with this feature is the delay it introduces when shutting down the system.

I have made this a habit to notice the Turn computer off dialog.

TurnOffWithUpdates

If I find the dialog size is larger than usual, then it’s time to prevent a time sink and Stop the automatic update service.

From a command prompt

type in either

net stop "Automatic Updates"

or

sc stop wuauserv

And, with that out of the way, I can get on with my life, until I boot the computer next time ;)

The ubiquity of "pet"s in Hyderabad

Been in Hyderabad for some days now, and I am getting used to the many “PET”s in Hyderabad. For starters, if you come to Hyderabad by air, the airport is in Begumpet. Then there is Ameerpet, a crowded, bustling marketplace (if I can call it a marketplace! Its more like all international brands crowding in whatever little space is available!) Then, there is Balkampet, Malakpet, Musapet, Dhoolpet, Shaikpet, Amberpet & Ramgopalpet. < begin PJ > I had forgotten entirely about those eight pets. Some time ago, I was refilling my bottle of water when I happened to glance at the lid, it read “Pearlpet!” < end PJ > Actually, given that Hyderabad is “the” place to come to for pearls in India, it would’nt’ve been a surprise to find a Pearlpet in Hyderabad.

And, I am inclined to believe that the “pet”s (of Hyderabad) mean a locality with a market place or a bazaar just like the “Peth”s of Pune. Pune….I have fond memories of Pune, will reminisce them in some other post.

Two human machine interfaces that I found interesting

Researchers use tongue as interface

At the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola,
researchers are developing a system that will use the tongue as the interface
for Navy SEAL divers, Army Rangers, and other front-line soldiers. Given the
very science-fiction-esque name of “Brain Port,” the technology enables sonar
echoes to be detected via the underused sensory organ, leaving the user’s hands
and eyes free to respond to immediate dangers.

Graphical world opens up for visually-impaired people

A new tactile device will allow the widespread use of graphical interfaces for
visually-impaired people. The tactile graphical display will open up new avenues
of employment, communication and personal expression. Conceivably it could do
for graphics what Louis Braille did for text in 1824.
